Olympic Silver + talent vs looks

The current generation should feel blessed that we are able to witness Singapore's first ever silver medal ever since Tan Howe Liang was bestowed a silver medal in Rome. Congratulations to team Singapore.

The cynical side of me says this is not Singapore's achievement, its more like a team 'mini china'. Its not home grown talent that won us the medal, but foreign legionnaires. You might even be tempted to call them mercenaries in the sporting arena.

But lest we forget, Singapore was a sleepy Malay fishing village before growing into an economic juggernaut. Many of us are immigrants from China, India and the Malayan Archipelago. Our forefathers came here with the promise of a better life, and I'm sure that was the intention of all the foreign talents here. To find a new beginning and dream the Singapore dream that is full of riches. I just hope they see Singapore as a final resting place and make this home, instead of enjoying the economic benefits Singapore has provided for them but shirking the responsibilities Singapore citizens shoulder. I want to see them settled here, learn and appreciate our culture and finally start a family. Then they can be truly called Singaporeans, not just someone holding the Singaporean passport.

The fiasco surrounding the lip syncing by Lin Mioke left a bad taste in my mouth. The Olympic Committee's decision of replacing the real voice by Yang Peiyi was utterly disappointing and an antithesis of the spirit of the Games. It's supposed to celebrate the individual spirit of the athletes and participants, but by replacing Peiyi with the more 'eye pleasing' Mioke, they have raped the spirit apart and left an indelible mark on the Games. What message are they trying to send to the world, and especially to the girls? That good looks take precedence over talent and hard work? That the world appreciates beauty more than brains? This will adversely affect the girls, eventhough they and their parents have said otherwise. Very disappointing indeed.

Ain's sick, maybe she misses me very much ;) Hope she gets well soon. Im looking forward to going shopping with her when I get my bursary after the exams.

I love you.
